Survey shows what buyers would like to have known before taking the plunge

A new survey has shown what buyers in the UK wish they had known before they made the decision to purchase their first home. It found that the majority wish they had been able to find out more about the state of the house and work needing done so they knew the scale of the task ahead of them.

According to the survey, as many as 16 per cent of people said it would have been preferable to know how much would need done to bring the home up to a standard they were happy with. On top of this, some 15 per cent said they would have liked to have known just how much this work would cost them.

Others said they would want to have known more about the process of becoming a homeowner,  with 13 per cent saying that having knowledge of the legal ins and outs of buying would have been good to have in advance.

And in addition to this, some even wish they themselves had acted differently and done things in a different way. For example, some 11 per cent said they wish they had gone for a bigger home than they bought, so they could grow into it, while another 11 per cent said they wished they had taken the time to shop around for a mortgage to secure themselves a better deal.

It’s clear that when the time comes to buy a home, there is plenty of advice that could be given to new buyers so they have all the knowledge they need to make the right decisions.

Aside from the cost of moving, making first time buyers aware of the practical decisions they need to make when buying their first home will give them a better chance. Our advice, and the advice of people that have already learnt these lessons, is to consider questions such as whether the property will increase in value, whether expensive DIY work is needed or whether your mortgage arrangement is going to work long term.
